The Government of Canada is currently inviting applications for the Vanier Canada Scholarship, a fully funded program available to eligible students.

Vanier Canada Scholarship Overview

Established in 2008, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program aims to bolster Canada’s capacity to attract and retain exceptional doctoral students, solidifying the country as a prominent center for research and advanced education.

Vanier Scholars demonstrate exceptional leadership qualities and achieve a notable level of academic excellence in their graduate studies spanning various disciplines, including social sciences, humanities, natural sciences, engineering, and health.

Benefits of Vanier Canada Scholarship

Successful applicants will receive an annual grant of $50,000 for a duration of three years. Opportunity to pursue Ph.D. studies at preferred Canadian institutions. Funding for studies will be fully or partially provided based on academic achievements, research proposal, and leadership capabilities.

Eligibility Criteria for Vanier Canada Scholarship

  • The applicant must be a student studying in Canada, whether Canadian or foreign.
  • Enrollment in a full-time Ph.D. program at a Canadian institution is required.
  • Nomination by a university with allocated Vanier CGS slots is mandatory (list updated on July 1).
  • Enrollment in the inaugural Ph.D. program is necessary.
  • Not currently receiving a fellowship or scholarship from Canadian agencies (CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC) for any other doctoral program.
  • Attainment of a first-class average in studies over the last two years.
  • Eligibility for students in joint professional degree programs (MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD), with funding provided only for the Ph.D. portion.
  • Research proposal must include a significant research component.
  • Not a faculty member at the institution with a Vanier quota or any other institution.
  • Must have obtained leave from the institution to pursue the Ph.D. program. Registration as a full-time student is required, with allowances for part-time enrollment under specific circumstances.
  • Canadian Federal Government employees can be eligible, provided they take unpaid leave.
  • Candidates meeting eligibility criteria can apply for both the Vanier scholarship and agency-specific Ph.D. scholarships.
  • However, if selected for multiple scholarships, they must choose one award post-selection.

Required Documents for Vanier Canada Scholarship

  • Application form through ResearchNet.
  • Two letters of reference. Curriculum vitae (CV) or resume.
  • Concise research contributions, limited to one page.
  • Personal statement highlighting leadership qualities.
  • Two letters of reference focusing on leadership abilities.
  • Research proposal with a maximum length of two pages.
  • Project preferences outlined in a document of up to five pages.
  • Academic documentation, including transcripts and certificates.
  • Documentation of special circumstances if applicable, not exceeding 0.5 pages for part-time students.
